Post 11: Rydges Hobart, a heritage hotel

Hey everyone, sorry for the long absence from the blog world. Just to share some good news with you all, I just made it to the front page of virgin.com with my guest blog, do read and comment (http://www.virgin.com/travel/news/hobart-australia-city-frozen-in-time). Taking cues from this blog, I have decided to share moments of the Hobart trip with you all.

While most of you will agree that a hotel is not really a blogging topic, a stay in Rydges @ Hobart will surely change your outlook. The hotel is a heritage property dating back to 1842 when it was chosen as the depot site for female convicts. Undergoing various changes in its usage, the hotel was formally opened on 12th May 1989.

When you reach the hotel, the Towering Mount Wellington casts a majestic eye on the structure, as if keeping an eye on it. The entry to the hotel has a lovely fountain splashing water in the air and giving a soothing feeling.

Once you reach the reception and complete all your formalities, a surprise awaits you. The receptionist will hand over a map to you, highlighting the path that you need to take to reach your suite. Yesss, this is a fact, dont agree with me, try it once 🙂

The local rugby field makes for the other boundary of the hotel. I was fortunate enough to witness a game between the local teams. Sun shine shining down on the ground was a welcome treat, especially in the freezing temperatures of town.

Evening time, this is when the real delight of this hotel comes to life. Just for a minute imagine reading the old english fictions. Dining around the fire place with fire burning and a glass of wine in hand. The chef would be more than happy to cook you a meal you will remember. The dessert makes you lick your spoon long after you finish the plate.

The suites are comfortable and I love the bed that Rydges has rolled out in most of their hotels. With heaters warming the room, a cup of hot chocolate and movies on the wall mounted LCD make for a wonderful way to go to sleep.

The hotel is at a short walk from the city center, the royal botanical garden and the upper domain road are also a short walk from the hotel so you will not feel lost if you decide to relax for a few days in this location. Also, if you book any tour of the region, the tour operator will be more than happy to pick you up from the hotel.

So get packing, finalise your booking at Rydges, How to reach Hobart can be found at my blog (http://www.virgin.com/travel/news/hobart-australia-city-frozen-in-time).
